How to change the sand in a swimming pool filter

Posted by agency@aqueous-digital.co.uk on 01.10.2026

Noticing cloudy or dull water in the swimming facilities you manage?

Or maybe users have reported feeling sand grains on the bottom of the pool bed?

These are just some of the various signs that it could be time to change the sand in a pool filter.

Fortunately, the expert team of water treatment engineers at Chemsol is here to walk you through the entire process of changing or replacing the sand filter media in a commercial swimming pool filter.

Step-by-step guide to changing the sand in a swimming pool filter

Before we explain how to change the sand in a swimming pool filter, here’s what you’ll need to make the process as smooth as possible.

Tools and equipment required:

  • New filter media – usually 16/30 grade silica sand (with a grain size of between 0.5-1mm)
  • Wet dry vacuum or scoop
  • Garden hose
  • Duct tape
  • Screwdriver
  • O-ring lubricant
  • Replacement parts – if necessary

Step 1: Switch off power (and pump) before draining

Changing sand in a pool filter must always start with switching off the power and pump before removing the filter head. Disconnecting the power supply ensures safety while you’re working and allows you to fully drain the water from the tank.

Step 2: Remove the filter head and old sand filter media

Once the tank has been drained, you can remove the filter head (also known as the multiport valve).

Depending on your pool filter, this could be secured via a clamp or bolts. As such, carefully loosen whatever attachment method is being used to secure the filter head to the top of the tank. You may need a screwdriver for this step.

Once detached, simply place the filter head to one side before removing the old sand using either a scoop or a wet dry vacuum cleaner.

Step 3: Cover the central pipe

Next, use the duct tape to cover the central pipe. This prevents any old or new sand from accidentally falling into the open pipe and entering the pool lines.

Step 4: Inspect various pool components

Use a garden hose to rinse the tank, then inspect the various pool filter components, including the plastic filter laterals and the O-ring – the flexible rubber seal that sits inside the tank to stop water from leaking out.

Make a note of any damage or wear and, if necessary and feasible, replace any components that no longer function properly.

Step 5: Prepare and add the new sand filter media

Next, you’ll need to change the sand in the swimming pool filter by slowly and evenly adding the exact type and amount of the new sand media as specified by the filter’s manual.

However, this should only be done after you’ve added a ‘cushion’ of water by filling the tank around a third of the way up – this helps to protect the delicate filter laterals.

Step 6: Reassemble the filter

You can then remove the duct tape covering the central pipe and clean away any sand stuck in the O-ring groove. Ensure the O-ring is properly lubricated using a suitable product, such as silicon-based lube, and then reattach the filter head using the same method as earlier.

Step 7: Backwash and rinse

Next, you’ll need to backwash and rinse the new sand for a short period of time before starting standard filtration. This penultimate step is essential for flushing out dust and debris which can turn the water cloudy.

Step 8: Confirm operation and troubleshoot

Finally, all that’s left to do is ensure the filter is running smoothly and troubleshoot accordingly.

You can do this by checking the pressure gauge (normal levels are typically between 10 and 25 PSI), looking for any leaks around the filter head, and periodically checking functionality over a 24-hour period.
