In the UK, you often won’t need planning permission if you want to construct a domestic outdoor pool. This is because these projects tend to be classed as ‘garden projects’. In some cases, however size and location restrictions may apply, so it’s important to seek further guidance if you’re unsure.
Pool Build & Installation
At the Chemsol Group, we understand that building a custom swimming pool is a major investment. That’s why our professional team put your budget first when bringing your vision to life and delivering the most suitable set-up for your property.
As part of our comprehensive pool installation service, we’ll take the time to understand your specific requirements, discuss your options, and successfully execute your ideas in the form of a stylish, innovative, and fully bespoke pool.
Pool Build Process Stage 1
Constructing Your Pool Shell
The first step to any pool installation project is the construction of the pool shell. We’ll initially confirm the finish floor level for your private or commercial swimming pool, using this as our datum in conjunction with detailed construction drawings to set out your swimming pool dimensions.
Once your exact size and positioning requirements have been confirmed, your contractor will excavate the feature space in preparation for your swimming pool build and installation.
Shuttering & Steel Reinforcement
Our professional swimming pool installation team will build a temporary shutter system from plywood to provide structural reinforcement for the pool shell, which will form four insulating walls for the pool walls and floor.
We’ll then create a steel-reinforced cage based on structural design calculations for your pool.
Pool Build Process Stage 2
Curing of Concrete
From the start of the project to completion, the build and installation of your swimming pool shell will take between 2 and 5 weeks, depending on the dimensions and complexity of your desired pool design.
Once the shell is completed, we’ll leave it to cure for a minimum of 4 weeks. While the shell is curing, we’ll get to work installing the necessary pipework from your pool to the plant room.
Fittings & Lights
Once the pool is cured, the holes for the fittings are drilled through the concrete shell. This gives the specified fittings and light niches the most secure water tight fitting. These can include:
- Pipe fittings
- Sumps
- Vacuum fittings
- Skimmers
- Return water inlets
- Advanced filtration systems
- Colour changing LED lighting
Pool Build Process Stage 3
Waterproof Coating
The next stage of the swimming pool installation and building process is to waterproof the steel reinforced shotcrete pool shell. This waterproofing membrane consists of a tough synthetic HDPE (High-density polyethylene) sheet, with an adhesive side covered by a pressure-sensitive protective coating.
When it comes into contact with concrete, it guarantees a tough, strong bond with the placed concrete itself (fully bonded). This composition guarantees a tough bond with the placed concrete. Finally, a waterproof tanking coating system is applied prior to fixing ceramic tiles using an appropriate adhesive.
We have such confidence in our pool installation and construction methods that we offer a 10-year structural guarantee to BS EN 1992-1-1.
Tiling & Copings
Upon completion of a drop test (filling the pool to check for leaks), your pool will be given time to dry before finishing with final fittings and tiling. Your luxury swimming pool will then be tiled to your choice of material, colour, and pattern.
We work with the best tile manufacturers in the world to provide you with an extensive range of options for your pool. From classic blue mosaic tiles, to porcelain, glass and stone tiles, as well as bespoke creations and heritage collections, you’ll find it all here.
We can even apply your bespoke personal design to make your luxury swimming pool even more unique and special to you or your business.
Pool Build Process Stage 4
Heat & Ventilation
While your pool shell is being tiled, we’ll begin the primary phase of your heating and ventilation system. We’ll carry out HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) work to regulate air temperature and humidity in your indoor pool space, ensuring that the air is healthy and recirculated correctly.
Ventilation and heating systems involve the installation of ductwork, so depending on the pool design, it will be fitted in the ceiling void, under the floor, or even both.
Pool Filtration & Water Management
To ensure you’re swimming in water that’s of such a high quality you could drink it, our state-of-the-art filtration systems, pumps, dosing equipment and inter-connecting pipework will be installed.
We also use Dryden Aqua integrated water systems to remove toxic chlorine by-products and ensure that your pool water is consistently clean and crystal clear for the perfect, ultra-luxurious swimming environment.
I'd like to thank all the team at Chemsol for their hard work and diligence during our pool build. In particular, our project manager Matt was great and helped bring the project together. Most importantly our kids love their new pool, as do all their friends!

However, in terms of adding actual monetary value to your home, it’s important to take into account the location of your home, as well as the quality of the pool build and installation, and how much the project is likely to cost you compared to the value it would add.
