Water Sources
One of the most important things to consider when utilising your own private water supply is the water source. There are three main types of water sources: natural spring, borehole, and surface water. We can help you establish a private water supply using a surface water source, including supply and installation of all of the necessary pumping, storage and water treatment equipment.
Natural Springs
The Chemsol Group has successfully located and developed many natural springs throughout Wales and England for individual properties, communities, estates, campsites and water bottling plants to serve as their main source of water supply.
A natural spring can often provide the best water source for a private water supply since they usually combine reliability with good water quality and can often provide a gravity-fed supply to the property thereby reducing the costs associated with pumped systems.
Please contact us if you require a spring catchment chamber and associated downstream infrastructure to be installed or upgraded.
Shallow Wells
Shallow dug wells are a type of well that relies on near surface groundwater entering the well from the sedimentary deposits (i.e. sands and gravels) overlying bedrock. They are usually formed using a large excavator capable of digging a hole a few metres deep in the sedimentary deposits. Once dug, the hole is usually lined with concrete rings for stability.
This type of well can be an important water source for domestic, agricultural and/or commercial purposes in areas where groundwater is close to the surface and where there is enough water available to meet the demand. In some cases, shallow dug wells may also be used as part of a larger groundwater development project.
Water quality from a dug well is not usually as good as a borehole water well or natural spring source, although it would usually be expected to be better than that from a surface water supply.
Surface Water
While surface water sources such as streams and rivers may be less expensive and require less infrastructure than groundwater sources, they are generally not the preferred option for a private water supply. This is because water quality is usually poor, and they are generally less reliable being prone to problems caused by freezing, blockages, and droughts.
Therefore, it is typically advisable to source private water supplies from groundwater sources such as wells and springs. These sources tend to have better water quality and be more reliable, although they may be more expensive to develop and require more infrastructure. Ultimately, the best option for a private water supply will depend on the specific circumstances of each case.
The Chemsol Group can assist with establishing a private water supply using a surface water source, including supply and installation of all of the necessary pumping, storage and water treatment equipment.
Borehole Drilling
If you are using a large volume of water or are facing costly meter charges from your mains supplier, installing a borehole can save you considerable sums of money. It is also an excellent alternative if you have poor water quality or an unreliable supply.
Sustainable in drought conditions and offering a reliable pressure, water boreholes can deliver safe, clean water direct to your property. Ideal for farms, caravan parks, leisure facilities and rural homes, water boreholes enable you to become independent of mains water.
You do not require a license if you are extracting up to 20,000 litres of water per day, meaning that the water borehole installation costs will eventually be outweighed by the utility savings.
Water boreholes also enable you to source natural water with no added chemicals. Therefore, if you are looking for a sustainable and cost-effective way to source water, installing a borehole is the ideal solution.
