How to maintain your pool filter system for long-term performance

Posted by Bryan Wilcock on 06.03.2025

Looking to get the most out of your commercial or domestic pool filter? Well-maintained swimming pool filtration systems can last anywhere from between five to 12 years, so regular and effective maintenance can make all the difference to keeping replacement costs down.

As experts in swimming pool and water treatment solutions, the professional team of engineers at Chemsol Group can point you in the right direction. Below, we explain how you can maintain your swimming pool filtration system, supporting smooth operation for many years to come.

Top tips for maintaining your pool filter system

The ideal pool maintenance routine depends on factors like pool usage, its surroundings (such as leafy areas where debris may accumulate), and whether it’s residential or commercial. However, there are a few essential tips we recommend every pool owner should follow.

  • Regularly strain the water for debris

While filters can remove a wide range of dirt and debris, it’s important to support the filter where possible. You can do this by removing large pieces of debris out of the water using a skimmer net made from a fine mesh. This fine mesh will ensure leaves, bugs, and other large objects can be collected before they get sucked into the pool water filtration system.

  • Carry out weekly backwashing

For pool filtration systems with the filter media of sand or glass, backwashing is particularly essential for dislodging dirt and debris that’s built up over time. The backwashing process simply involves reversing the flow of water through the filter system to help remove contaminants.

Once these contaminants have been dislodged, they can be removed via the waste line or a hose that’s connected to the swimming pool filtration pump. While you must take into consideration the unique requirements of your pool, backwashing your pool should be done either on a weekly basis or as part of your regular, scheduled maintenance.

  • Close your pool for the winter

Another way you can protect your swimming pool water filtration system is by taking the proper steps when closing your pool for the winter – which includes lowering the water level to at least six inches below the skimmers.

Taking these steps will help to prevent water from entering the system and reaching the pool filtration pump where it could subsequently freeze and lead to cracks. Not to mention, properly closing the pool for winter will mean it’s easier to reopen once the warmer weather returns.
