Pool filtration systems: Which one is right for you?
Searching for the best pool filtration system for your home or business? Instead of immediately opting for the most affordable or even the most premium pool filtration system, why not spend a little longer understanding the benefits of each type of swimming pool filtration system currently on the market?
Fortunately, the expert team here at Chemsol have installed countless pool filtration systems, so we can help you to determine which type of pool filtration system would be best for your commercial swimming pool or home spa. We explore the different types of filtration systems below.
What are the different types of pool filtration system?
There are three key types of different pool filtration system including sand, diatomaceous earth (DE), and cartridge. To help you understand the various types of swimming pool filtration system available, how they work, and which one is best for your pool, we explained each one in more detail below.
Sand pool filtration systems
As the name suggests, this type of pool filtration system pumps water through sand contained in the filter. The sand is able to filter out small dirt and debris between 20-40 microns, thereby helping to purify the water as it’s returned to the pool.
In general, this type of swimming pool filtration system is considered relatively easy to both use and maintain by the pool owner, alongside being inexpensive and only requiring a change of sand every 5-7 years.
DE pool filtration systems
Similar to sand pool filtration technology, a DE pool filtration system simply uses diatomaceous earth to filter out impurities in your pool water. This diatomaceous earth contains many sponge-like organisms that can absorb even microscopic dirt and debris from the swimming pool as the water passes through the filter.
With the ability to filter out impurities between 3-5 microns, this system can filter out far more impurities than the sand system. This type of swimming pool filtration system also has a greater holding capacity than other systems, ensuring a longer filter cycle and the removal of more impurities.
Cartridge pool filtration systems
A cartridge pool filtration system filters out impurities from a pool using a single layer of synthetic fabric (a cloth-type material). This fabric is attached in pleats (which maximise the square footage of the filter) to a cylindrical core, filtering out and trapping impurities like dirt and debris as the water is pumped through this layer of fabric.
This type of swimming pool filtration system is commonly used to remove impurities as small as 10-15 microns from small above-ground pool and spas. Relatively easy to maintain, the filter in this type of filtration system will need to replaced roughly once a year.
What is the best pool filtration system?
Each type of pool filtration system has its own benefits and areas to consider as explained above, so there’s no ‘best pool filtration system’ for every pool or spa. However, if you’re searching for a swimming pool filtration system that provides the best filtering results, you may want to consider a DE system as it can remove impurities between 3-5 microns.
However, this system does require fresh DE powder to be added regularly, so if you’re searching for a more low-maintenance system, a sand pool filtration model could be more suitable. Cartridge pool filtration systems are similarly low-maintenance, but can also filter out smaller impurities than a sand system.
Ultimately, the right pool filtration system will therefore vary depending on your budget, how much maintenance you want to provide, the level of filtration you require, and how much use your commercial or residential pool or spa receives.
